From the Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Energy and the Provincial Coal Geological Bureau, Sichuan province is deploying to speed up the shale gas drilling wells exploration and strive to submit the first shale gas proved reserves report of Sichuan Province at the end of 2015.

According to "The National Survey and Assessment shale gas resource potential and favorable area preferred" which issued by the Ministry of Land and gas research center in 2012 China's shale gas estimated total geological resources is 134 trillion cubic meters. Shale gas resources in Sichuan Province is about 27.5 trillion cubic meters which accounting for 21% of the country. The estimated recoverable resources is about 4.42 trillion cubic meters which accounting for 18 percent of the country. Both are among the first in the country.

Sichuan Provincial Coal Geological Bureau related official said even we have these data to support the Sichuan Basin shale gas bearing strata bit’s stability, output shape, depth, thickness, and other lithofacies paleogeography and geological characteristics of basic geological issues need to be deepen the study and understanding. After find out the "real situation" of shale gas we can finally planning the next exploration program based on the distribution and characteristic of resources, such as layout, scale development, etc. of shale gas development, to attract more social capital to participate in shale gas development.

Currently there are 5 main investors of shale gas exploration and development in Sichuan which is PetroChina’s subordinate units Southwest Oil and Gas Field Company, Zhejiang Oilfield Company and Sichuan Changning Gas Development Company and Sinopec’s subordinate units Southwest Oil and Gas Branch and South exploration Branch. They have already found 42 gas wells in Weiyuan, Changning and junlian block of Sichuan which 11 wells was put into trial production and has accumulate produced 140 million cubic meters commodity gas.
